01Ten questions a day beats a Saturday marathon
Mathematics is a skill, not a story — you cannot cram a skill. Ten focused questions every day does more for your grade than five hours once a week, because your brain consolidates method between sessions.
Make it a fixed appointment: same time, same place, roughly ten questions. On a bad day, do five. The chain matters more than any single day — miss one day, fine; never miss two in a row.
02Study the syllabus, not rumours
Every year, pupils waste weeks on topics that cannot appear, and skip topics that always do — because they revise from rumour instead of the official document.
Download the O-Level syllabus from our Syllabi page (it is free), and let it be the referee. If a topic is in it, it is fair game. If it is not, close that WhatsApp forward and move on.
03Past papers are for method, marks come from understanding
Working through past papers is the single highest-value revision activity — but only if you do it honestly: attempt the question fully before looking at any answer, under time pressure, without a calculator where the paper forbids one.
When you get a question wrong, the job is not to memorise the correct answer. It is to find the exact line where your method went wrong — a sign error, a formula misremembered, a rule half-known — and fix that. The same errors repeat across years; fix one and you have fixed ten future questions.
04Make your revision load-shedding-proof
Power cuts should not decide your grade. Build a routine that survives them: download PDFs while you have data and power, keep a paper notebook of formulas and worked mistakes, and treat daylight hours as prime study time.
A candle-lit hour with a pen, past paper and your mistake notebook is a perfectly good study session. The pupils who make it are not the ones with constant electricity — they are the ones whose routine does not depend on it.
05Attack your weakest topic first, not your favourite
It feels good to practise what you are already good at. It is also nearly useless. The marks you are losing live in your weakest three topics, and an hour there is worth three hours anywhere else.
Be honest about what those topics are — your last test results know the truth. Then go directly at them: syllabus outcomes, worked examples, then questions until the method stops feeling foreign.
06Know your formulas cold — and know which ones are given
There is a short list of formulas that decide dozens of marks: areas and volumes, the quadratic formula, laws of indices, sector area, gradient and distance, the sine and cosine rules. Write them on one page. Read that page every day for two weeks and it becomes permanent.
Equally important: practise with π = 22/7 where papers ask for it, and get comfortable working without a calculator — Paper 1 rewards clean arithmetic habits.
07Use your study group for methods, not answers
A WhatsApp group that shares final answers makes everyone weaker. A group that shares methods makes everyone stronger. The rule: nobody posts an answer without the working, and anyone who understands a topic teaches it — because explaining is the deepest form of revision.
Keep groups small (three to five serious people), keep sessions short, and end every session with each person writing down one thing they could not do before.
08Plan backwards from the time-table
Get the official exam time-table (free on our Time-tables page), find your Mathematics papers, and count the weeks between now and then. That number — not your mood — should set your pace.
Split the remaining weeks across the syllabus topics, weakest first, and protect the final two weeks for full past papers under exam conditions. The night before a paper is for sleep, a checked NRC and exam slip, and an early alarm — not for learning new topics.
